Assignment- Art Provenance Research

Hello everyone,
As we discussed last week, I would like everyone to pick their favorite art piece in ANY MEDIA and find the Provenance for it, or where it is currently. Please upload a picture of the piece or URL so people can Find it! This should be really cool and enlightening if we all participate. Please add your research as a comment to this so we keep the assignments linked together!!
Thanks,
Amy

  1. My favorite piece of art ever is Antonio Canova's statue, 'Psyche Revived by Cupids Kiss'.

It was commissioned in 1787. Prince Yusupov who was a Russian noble man got the statue during a trip to Rome in 1796.Joachim Murat later donated the origonal to the Louvre in 1824. Many versions were made. But the first one was, as I said, donated to the louvre.

  2. One of my favorite paintings would have to be Sunrise by Monet, dated 1872, oil on canvas. The subject is the harbor of Le Havre in France. In 1874, Sunrise was displayed in the first independent Impressionists show. Sunrise was stolen from the Musee Marmottan Monet in 1985 and recovered in 1990. It is currently located back in the Musee Marmottan Monet in Paris.

  3. A favorite painting of mine is Caspar David Friedrich's "Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog", painted in oil around 1818.

The "Wanderer" is in the Kunsthalle in Hamburg, Germany. In 1886, the Kunsthalle's first Director, Alfred Lichtwark, began to establish the permanent collection at the gallery. Though I could not find the exact date, it seems that the "Wanderer" most likely joined the Kunsthalle's collection between 1886-1914.

  4. Although I could not find the provenance for my favorite piece another favorite of mine is the Winged Victory of Samothrace which was commissioned around 200-190 BCE and the Roman marble copy was discovered in 1863.The Samothrace Archaeological Museum continues to follow the provenance.

At one point the statue was in possesion of Demetrios' personal enemy Lysimachus. After being discovered in 1963 it was reconstructed by Champoiseau in 1879 before being shipped to Paris. Since then the statue has remained in the Daru staircase at the Louvre while plaster replicas have been erected in other museums.

  5. ABOUT ‘THE DYING SLAVE BY MICHELANGELO’

Why is Michelangelo considered to be the world's best artist?

How many people might think that this man is 'the dying slave' without title and description of this work? I feel very calm by this man's behavior is too flexible. The Dying Slave was intended for the tomb of Pope Julius II. This is expressed figured paradoxical and tragic situation as "Death soon liberate".

"I only just remove unwanted parts. There is a statue and Arts." said Michelangelo.

The pieces to the Michelangelo, It just means to liberate the shape of trapped in the stone by removing unnecessary parts. The purpose of art to Michelangelo was to realize the beauty. That was not a process of joy and pride to rely on his talent. He strongly believed that art works was already there in the stone.

He also did not say anything about creating beauty dare. And he was not interested in his own abilities.

From there, I have to learn humility and respect, I also feel.
I would like to dream of liberated slaves than the dying slave.
